Matthew Leavey MRSS(t)

Matthew Leavey

Matthew first came to shiatsu through his martial arts training. Having suffered various injuries he discovered its ability to alleviate pain and this became a directing force towards his studying Shiatsu and the healing arts. He is now a BSS trainee teacher regularly assisting teachers on several of the London courses as well as a popular teacher at practise classes.

Matthew graduated from the BSS-Do in 2000. His main teachers were Ray Ridolfi, Susanne Franzen, Hilary Totah and Al Pelowski, with other teachers being Cam Burridge, Liz Arundel, Liz Cruickshanks, Kate Burford and Dan Stretton.

As part of the BSS-Do supported placements Matthew worked as a volunteer at ‘Body and Soul’. This is a charity supporting families affected by HIV and AIDs. Here many issues around the quality of care were embodied and a debt of gratitude is remembered to those, kind enough to share their lives so openly.

A direct result of Matthew’s early Shiatsu training inspired him to study Yoga at the Iyenga Yoga Institute, 24 form Yang Style Tai Chi with Lei Lei Chu and he later returned to study Tai Chi Chuan, Qi- Gong, Hsing Yi, and Kung Fu with master Peter Warr. Matthew now regularly uses these exercise modalities to support his Shiatsu and teaching practice.

As part of his continuing professional development Matthew has trained with a number of Shiatsu teachers in the UK, Europe and the USA including his main inspiration Zen teacher Master Wataru Ohashi who was a student of Masanaga Sensei. Matthew has also studied Remedial Massage with Brandon Raynor that he uses specifically in his work with those going through a process of rehabilitation.

As well as his teaching commitments Matthew maintains busy practices in the City of London and with corporate clients at Canary Wharf.
